About me

'What I Learned at SRU' is an Avatar: The Last Airbender & Legend of Korra-inspired modern day college series about friendship, romance, family...and growing up. It is not a re-telling of the series, it is an original plot with backstories and certain pieces heavily inspired by The Last Airbender/Legend of Korra story.

It's a massive fanfiction/fanart project that could perhaps be best summarized as Avatar: TLA/LoK meets How I Met Your Mother in a college setting (though less comedy and perhaps more Gillmore Girls-like drama/friendship/feelings...?). It is a huge love letter and narrative reply to the Avatar series, exploring themes concerning young adulthood.

The goal: create a serialized story that avoids cliches (I know this 'school' concept probably has a lot of them) and relies on character development and interaction dynamics to tell a down-to-earth story that is a giant reply to the series while simultaneously exploring my own real-life experiences in higher education and young-adult living.

Themes in the story have similarities to the show while also veering off into other directions, expressing ideas about topics like moving on in spite of loss, romantic breakups, growing from a teenager into an adult, gender identity, sexuality, and more.
